| On 21 October 1797, the frigate, which had been authorized in 1794 and constructed in Boston, was launched successfully. As the ship made her way into the harbor, Captain James Sever, from Portsmouth, NH, christened the frigate USS Constitution with a bottle Madeira wine. |
